Botanicals

Plant extracts have been important constituents of food and medicines for centuries and even today, in the 21st century, a large number of current pharmaceutical preparations are based on chemicals that are found naturally in plants...

Flavex has been manufacturing plant extracts for over 20 years and can offer a wide list of products that meet the specifications of the British Pharmacopoeia, (BP), the British Pharmaceutical codex, (BPC), and other standard reference formulas. A list of the key galenical products is contained in this section.

Most plant extracts made by Flavex are prepared from dried plant materials sourced from all over the world. The Flavex purchasing team has built up contacts that can source most commercially available plant materials within a relatively short period of time although as with all natural products such supplies are influenced by climate and seasonality / growing season.

Plant extracts are also made for use in the manufacture of toiletries and cosmetics as well as in food and beverage applications for which there is a particularly rapid growing demand.

Product types:
Whilst particular kinds of extracts can always be manufactured to meet specific customer needs, most of the products made by Flavex will be as Tinctures, Liquid or fluid extracts, Soft extracts, Dry extracts, Hydroglycollic extracts or Standardised extracts.

Plant and equipment:
Flavex has available a dedicated area for the manufacture of plant extracts. Extraction vessels of varying size are available including facilities with circulation and heating.

Extracts can be clarified by a variety of filtration equipment. Evaporation is carried out in our plant using a climbing film evaporator operating under vacuum.

Extracts are normally 'finished' or standardised in finishing stills and a vacuum dryer is available for the manufacture of dry extracts.
